Essential items for moving

The moving day is approaching: what will you need?

For packing: ample packing supplies

  • Enough moving boxes;

  • Special wardrobe boxes are available: you can transport your clothes on hangers without the need to iron them all immediately;

  • Newspaper or kitchen paper to wrap fragile items such as glasses, dishes, cups, and other breakables to prevent breakage;

  • Tape to securely seal the boxes.

Tip: when disassembling cabinets, beds, or other furniture, you often end up with loose screws and nuts. Pack these in small, sturdy plastic bags and label them to identify the components. Attach them with tape to the furniture: this way, you won't lose them, and you'll be able to easily reassemble the furniture in your new home.

Moving dollies

One of the most indispensable tools for moving is a moving dolly: small platforms with casters. These handy aids can easily carry heavy loads like cabinets, and since they have wheels, you can effortlessly move your heavier items.

A moving lift

Are you moving from the 5th floor to a new apartment on the 7th floor? In that case, a moving lift is highly recommended. Especially if your building lacks an elevator, a moving lift is an absolute necessity. Cabinets, tables, your washing machine, and your dryer: these large and heavy items are not something you want to lift! Many moving companies offer the use of a moving lift free of charge or for a nominal fee. If you are handling the move yourself, you can also rent a moving lift.

A trailer or van

Your belongings must reach their new destination: you will likely need a van or a large trailer for this. If you hire a moving company to assist you with your move, they will provide a moving truck. When handling the move yourself, you will need to ask a family member or acquaintance with a van or a large trailer for help, or rent one yourself.

Ensure that large items are securely positioned while packing the van, and preferably, use ratchet straps to fasten them.

Tip: are you moving a long distance? Be sure to confirm that all your belongings will fit in the moving vehicle(s): you don’t want to make two trips. It's better to rent a van that is too large than one that is too small or a trailer.

Essential items to keep close during the move

It is wise to keep the items you will need immediately upon arriving at your new home in one box. Consider including cleaning supplies and food and drinks:

  • Coffee, the coffee machine, sugar, and milk;

  • Disposable cups and plates (which saves you from washing dishes after a long day of moving!);

  • Cutlery;

  • Food and drinks such as lunch and snacks for the journey;

  • Cleaning supplies;

  • Toilet paper;

  • Trash bags;

  • Wire connectors and light bulbs;

  • Tools, such as screwdrivers.

Moving tip: start early!

A move often involves more than you might anticipate: therefore, begin well in advance. You can start arranging for the internet connection in your new home months ahead of time. Sorting through your belongings can also take considerable time. Take a critical look at all the boxes of items you still have in the attic or the guest room: do you truly want to bring everything to your new home?

Tip: start early with sorting through your items and consider selling things you do not wish to take with you through platforms such as Marktplaats. This way, you can avoid moving these items, potentially earn some money from your old furniture, and bring joy to someone else.

Save money on the sale of your home?

One of the most exciting aspects of a move is selling your own home. You want to ensure that the transfer of your property occurs at the right time, so you do not incur double expenses. The selling price is also crucial: you wish to receive as much money as possible for your home.
