Are you moving to a new home in a different municipality? Then there are several things you need to take into account. You must register your move with the new municipality and update your details there. Municipal taxes may change, and you might need to find a new school or childcare for your children. In short, moving to a new municipality involves a lot of steps.
One of the things you may need to arrange is selling your current home. We’re happy to assist you with that. With offices in Amsterdam, Almere, and Hoofddorp, KIJCK. makelaars is your go-to partner for selling your property. For a low all-in fee of €3950, we handle the entire sales process for you, from professional photography to viewings and negotiations.
Registering in a Different Municipality
When you move, you must report the move to your new municipality. This applies whether you are moving to a different municipality or relocating within your current one. If you're moving to a new municipality, your move will be automatically communicated to your current municipality. This saves you extra work!
The municipality will register your move in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP). Many institutions retrieve their data automatically from this registry. This means you don't need to inform institutions like:
The Tax Authority;
The RDW (Dutch Vehicle Authority);
Your health insurance;
Hospitals;
The police and fire department;
DUO (Student Finance).
In some municipalities, you can report your move online. In other cases, you may need to go to the town hall in person to complete the process. Make sure to bring your passport and (a copy of) your rental or purchase contract.
Note: You must report your move to the municipality within 5 days after relocating. If you don’t do this or do so too late, you may face a fine.
What Does Your Move Mean for Taxes?
Municipal taxes vary from municipality to municipality. If you’re moving to a different municipality, the rates for these taxes are likely to change. This includes taxes like:
Property tax (OZB);
Sewerage tax;
Waste disposal tax;
Dog tax (if applicable).
Your waterboard tax may also change. The Netherlands has 24 water boards, each with its own tax rates. You don’t need to take action yourself; the Tax Authority will automatically receive your updated information through the BRP and adjust your taxes accordingly.
Are Your Children Moving with You?
If you have children who are moving with you to a different municipality, they may need to switch to a new school or childcare facility. Start looking for a suitable school or daycare early. Waiting lists, especially for daycare, can be long, so it’s important to register your children in time.
